What Do You Plan to Read During the Winter Break?
Have you ever posted a comment to a blog? If so, great, you already know how easy it is to comment to a blog. If not, here’s your chance.
Please share the title of a book you’re either planning to read before 2007 comes to an end, or share a title (or two) of your all time favorite book. Simply click on “comment” located toward the bottom of the original post, and leave your comment about your book title of choice for the LHS Library Blog Weblog. Thanks and do enjoy your winter break and your favorite book!
This blog will also be posted to the LHS library website under our Book Club Blog!
Not sure what to read? Try http://www.librarything.com
All you really need to do is create a new user ID and password, an email address is optional. Then click on suggestions and plug in the title of a book that you’ve enjoyed in the past. Library Thing’s book suggester will provide numerous titles for you to choose from and hopefully pick up from your friendly LHS library or public library in your community.

I’m planning to read Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky, “A finely made work of fiction that portrays occupied France with both severity and sympathy….” and our LHS Book Club book, Code Talker, by Joseph Bruchac, “a novel about the Navajo Marines of World War Two.”
I would like to recommend 2 book titles that I’ve enjoyed: 1) All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, a National Book Award in 1992 and 2) Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman, a Mythopoeic Fantasy Award (Adult Literature, 2006)

I really enjoyed “1,000 White Women” and “The Red Tent”. Both of these are unusual for me, as I rarely read books that have protagonists who are women. Both of these books explore the lives of strong female central characters that are trying to solidify who they are in scenarios that are mostly out of their control. Pick either one for an enjoyable and interesting easy read. Happy Reading!! Kim

Kim,
Thanks for the reminder, I do want to read “One Thousand White Women” by Jim Fergus! I looked up a summary and found this short description, “”Fergus lets his imagination go wild and creates a journal of one of his ancestors who became one of those brides in 1875.”
Thanks,
Joanne

Last summer I picked a book for each of my older boys to read and they picked one for me. They picked Wicked, by Gregory Maguire, for me to read. It is a book I NEVER would have read on my own, but I did enjoy it. It fits right in with the books Kim described with a strong female protagonist. Definitely more risque than books I normally read.

I am just beginning to read “Light a Penny Candle” by Maeve Binchey. It is a great story about friendship during WWII, with a little bit of history (I know I’m a dork) mixed in about British families sending their children away during the blitz.
I am also listening to “Les Miserables” on tape during my commute to work. Very interesting classic story.
Books that I have recently finished and LOVED:
the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I have read the entire series of 13 books and still laugh out loud at how funny she is.
“Water for Elephants” great story about the circus, love and murder.
“The House” by Danielle Steele. Great story about a woman in her 30s learning about who she is.

I plan on finishing Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Godoy. I am well into this Nobel Prize winner about two young people who fall desperately in love but are forbidden to marry. This was an Oprah pick.
The other book that I will try to read is Rescuing Sprite by Marc Levin. I say try because I just had to say ggodbye to my chocolate lab who was diagnosed with bone cancer in May. He went through a leg amputation and chemo like a champ. This is a true story about Levin’s dog who battled an illness over two years. The dog taught Levin and his family many lessons about love and life. I hope I can get through it. If it is anything like Marley and me, chances are not good!

I plan to read “Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant” by Daniel Tammet. I heard about this man and his book on NPR’s Talk of the Nation and it sounds fascinating. I also recently picked up “Love in the Time of Cholera”.
Shawn, I love the idea of choosing books with your kids. I’ll try that.

I love the Stephanie Plum series. They are hilarious.
I just finished The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It is pretty emotional, but very good.
I plan on reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author over break.
An interesting book that I recommend is 19 minutes by Jodi Piccoult. It is about a high school shooting, but from an interesting perspective. Reading it as a high school teacher was different.

Wow! It’s so nice to hear that you’ll all be spending a portion of your upcoming holidays reading fabulous books. I’m not planning on reading “Rescuing Sprite”, due to the fact that tears welled just at hearing Patty describe “Marley and Me”, but I do plan to purchase “Rescuing Sprite” for the LHS library community.
I also heard the discussion on NPR’s Talk of the Nation about “Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant” and hope to read that in the future. Andrea, I’d love to hear back from you as to whether you enjoyed this read. I read “Love in the Time of Cholera” many years ago, and hope to reread this title, prior to watching the film.
Sarah, you’ve recommended some great titles to our staff. Hosseini is a brilliant and powerful writer. “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is not to be missed! Of course Jodi Piccoult’s stories are full of twists and turns and this novel, which I have not read, is one that we as educators may or may not have a difficult time picking up.

When all of you fun people will celebrating at fun holiday parties, I will be reading “War and Peace” by Tolstoy. Yes, I am a dork and in the words of Kim Hoog, “Why would I ever want to bring that doorstop home?” I don’t know why I would torture myself reading such a “heavy” classic. However, I am looking foward to it. I do have a few fluff books on hand, such as “Loving Frank”, in case my mind wants to stop thinking just briefly. It is a historical novel on the love affair of one woman with Frank Lloyd Wright. And before I get to either of those books, I am finishing “Why We Run,” a book that questions the insanity of people like myself that are running a marathon in less than four weeks.
